Samansuo is a suburb in Sefwi Juaboso at the sub area of Bodi District in Akomtobra Constituency, Western Region which is a farming community.
Sefwi is a cocoa growing community where most people believe the residents have money. In this situation, the story is different because, most parents there are not cocoa owners but just care takers of cocoa farms, where they toil their blood day in and out yet when the cocoa beans are sold, the money is divided into three (3) parts and these parents only get one out of three which is half of all the works they have done.
Appeal for School Uniform
This affects the parents and children economically, but they do not have any option. Change Agent Media visited Samansuo D/A primary school to interact with some of the pupils and teachers to know how effective their education is.
It is very frustrating and humiliating to see pupils with tattered school uniforms, while others do not have school uniforms at all. Some do not have foot wears therefore are compelled to wear flip flops to school. Others have also dropped out of school due to lack of school uniforms. The sight of these kids, in this state at school creates tantrums and emotional disturbances.
Speaking to a teacher who would want to remain anonymous, he said the teachers in the school have tried their possible best to provide some of these kids with uniforms with their monthly salaries but the situation is becoming unbearable, therefore they calling on the government and benevolent organisations to supply the pupils with school uniforms, school bags, foot wears among other basic materials to enhance teaching and learning.
“Some of them have shirt uniforms but do not have shorts uniforms while others do not have either, not even under wears,” he said.
According to the teacher who has been in the school for the past three years now, stressed that, parents are aware of the situation but they say they are financially handicapped.
“We have tired our possible best to help them, but I think the problem is too much for the teachers to address, therefore we will be very grateful if government, philanthropist among other benevolent organisation comes to our aid,” he appealed.
Speaking to some of the pupils, they said they feel ashamed and humiliated when they come to school to see some in uniforms and they, not in any.
In an interview with one of the pupils by name Akwasi who is in class three (3), he said he would want to be a President but always come to school with no school uniform.
“I stay with my parents but they said they do not have money to buy me uniform so I do not have any option but to come to school since I want to study hard to be the President of Ghana,” he stated.
According to him, his parents are aware of the kind of dress they wear to school for some years now but there is nothing the parents could do about it.
Another student revealed himself as Asare Stephen who is also in class three and would want to be a soldier in future.
Master Asare always come to school with tattered uniform where the bottom part of the shorts is not pleasant for the eye.
“My mother said she does not have money to buy new uniform. I feel very ashamed when coming to school,” he said.
Upon a second look, he has wearing a shoe which has been tied with a rope because, it has torn but that is the only shoe he has.
Sometimes, they use this unfortunate situation as an excuse to stay home.
Parents confirmed that, they are aware of the situation but would not help because there is no money.
They call on Ghanaians to come to their aid, and help their children pursue their education.
